Blessings, Bargains, and BBQ

Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016

The fundraiser/garage sale that ORLC organized today was tremendous!  I think everyone had a great time, many customers found great bargains, we were extremely busy, it was well organized, we had enthusiastic helpers, and great BBQ. Here are a few photos I took during the event. (Jeff took the last 3 photos)

Palm Sunday

Sunday, Mar. 20, 2016

This Palm Sunday was pretty special for two reasons other than it was Palm Sunday:

1) Eight or ten of our youngest members participated in the celebration by placing palm branches in the manger in the front of the church. It is always heart-warming to see our kids participate in the ceremonies and this was no exception.

2.) We had the benefit of guitar accompaniment by Kim Umphress and Isaac Orao during the early part of the service. They have added much to the service in the recent past and this was no exception - they play beautifully together!

Kitchen Cleaning Time

Saturday, Mar. 5, 2016

One of the many responsibilities of the Board of Stewardship is to periodically give the kitchen a thorough cleaning. Eight wonderful volunteers (Lisa and Sarah Guillory, Evelyn and Sal Pisano, Holly Treadway, Marcella Comfort, Ann Teegardin, and Rhonda Stephens) grabbed their cleaning materials and did exactly that on Saturday. All the cabinets were cleaned and organized. I inspected the kitchen today and I have to admit - they did a 1st class job!

New Floor for the Fellowship Hall

Monday, Feb. 16, 2016

Took this photo last night of our freshly stripped and waxed floor in the Fellowship Hall. The crew at Agape Cleaning Industry also did both restrooms, three classrooms, one office, and the narthex. They did a great job! Buzz, Doug and Stan came in this morning to help move everything back. Thanks, guys!

Rev. Gary Tebbe and Amelia, from the Christian School of the Andes

Sunday Feb. 15, 2016

Rev. Gary and Amelia Tebbe, missionaries with the Calvary Commission, are founders of the Christian School of the Andes for needy children in the city of Huanuco, Peru. The school provides children with a Christian education in a safe and loving environment.

Though Huanuco is a large and beautiful city in the central Andes Mountains, it is impoverished, many children do not attend school, and many families are deteriorating. It is estimated that Peru has 500,000 are homeless children who roam the streets looking for food and shelter.

The solution to the problem, and an escape from the pervasive poverty is education -preferably a Christian education, which provides the children with a solid foundation for this life and the next.

Reverend Tebbe discussed the mission an the many problems encountered in an environment we are not familiar with. Their work is extremely important!

You can read more about them at their web site at and their Facebook page at Christian School of the Andes.

A voter's meeting was held in the Fellowship Hall after worship services. The meal was well attended and the food was the best ever. If you missed it, you missed a great time and a great meal.

Congregational Christmas Party

Saturday, December 19, 2015

Those who showed up for the annual Congregational Christmas Party were in for a real treat - great fellowship and great food!  Bruce, Jeff and Caleb spent all day cookin' up some great BBQ that included sausage, ribs, chicken, and pork. It was pot luck, so we also had beans, coleslaw, potato salad and all the other trimmings. And, we had more dessert than we could eat. No one went home hungry that night!

Sunday School Children's Christmas Program

Sunday, December 13, 2015

Today's service was very special with the presentation of the Sunday School Children's Christmas Program.

The children in the scene ranged in age from three to about six. The presentation consisted of the reading of the Christmas story as recorded on Luke 2:1-20. Christmas carols ushered in the manger scene, the shepherds, and the wise men in sequence.

The youngsters did very well, but still required support and coaching from the parents sitting in the front pew. There was a well deserved round of applause when they finished!

New Gate Dinner

Saturday, December 12, 2015

The ORLC Evangelism Committee and volunteers teamed up to cook and serve over 100 BBQ chicken dinners to homeless people at the New Gate United Methodist Church day program on South Mobberly, here in Longview. Some who volunteered were Carol and Jeff, Lisa, Bruce, and Sarah, Kristen and Rudy, Marcella, Holly, Rachel, Issac, Joe and Caleb. It takes a lot of effort to organize, prepare, deliver, serve, the meals and then clean up everything. These church members stepped up and did an outstanding job, and a bunch of people who really need a good, home cooked meal were satisfied.

Reformation Day Dinner and Service

Saturday, October 31, 2015

This service was a joint effort that combined the talents of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Kilgore, Texas. The day started with a pot-luck dinner at 4:30. The food was outstanding as was the company of great friends, so we had a wonderful time. Dinner was followed by a special service at 5:30. The service was chanted by Rev. Dr. Jayson Galler while music was provided by trombonists Tyler and Jeanna Watts and trumpetist Ken Koehlert.
